Divorcing parents are increasingly attempting to “brainwash” their children in order to help them win custody disputes, lawyers have revealed.

There has been a notable trend in parents exerting undue influence on their children in a bid to turn them against their partner, solicitors from Pannone have revealed.

As the Telegraph reported recently, the specialists have noted computer games, mobile phones, designer clothes and even holidays abroad as gifts used to win the loyalty of a child or children.

In other cases, the lawyers revealed, parents attempt to blacken the child’s image of the other parent.

A Pannone solicitor, Naomi McGloin, commented that “brainwashing” is becoming more and more common. She said: “The views of older children carry particular weight in court because they are considered more likely to be able to decide things for themselves. However, the opinions of younger children are also relevant.”

But courts are getting wise to the attempts, which have often backfired on the parent.

Going through a divorce can be a stressful time, from the worry of finding a buyer for the marital property to separating possessions, but it is important to make the transition as smooth and upset-free as possible. For advice, click here.
