A trend has emerged in America whereby pet owners use therapies intended for humans to treat their pets.

A report by ABC news revealed that physical therapy, hydro-therapy, and even alternative therapies – specifically acupuncture – are being used to help pooches when they are in pain.

Leilani Alvarez, a vet working at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, said: “Acupuncture works primarily with the central nervous system, so there really isn’t an equivalent conventional medicine.”

According to the report, the ancient therapy is used by three million people in the United States to help them stop smoking or deal with pain among other uses. However, at Animal General Hospital in New York, vet have been using acupuncture to help dogs who are suffering from conditions such as chronic back problems,

Of course pets cannot tell their owners whether a treatment has worked or not, just as they cant tell them how much they love their new pet toys, but their owners have said they are certain they can see a difference. Dachshund Delilah’s owner Mark Rindler swears that acupuncture made all the difference to her: “I know it was acupuncture because the other stuff didn’t work,” he said. “After these treatments, she was like a little puppy again.”
